We are excited to introduce a new residency in Madrid this year. This eight-day program follows the same immersive model as our Florence residency, combining studio practice, museum visits, and the study of painting conservation.
Following in the footsteps of Cennino Cennini and the painters of the Italian Renaissance, the court artists of the Spanish monarchy took the next major step in the evolution of painting. Madrid’s Prado Museum houses one of the world’s most important painting collections, spanning the medieval, Renaissance, and Baroque periods. Its holdings include works by masters such as Fra Angelico, Titian, Tintoretto, and Rubens, and are especially strong in paintings by Velázquez, Ribera, and El Greco. The collection also features extraordinary works such as Bosch’s The Garden of Earthly Delights and Goya’s late paintings.
These artists not only mastered the techniques of the Italian Renaissance but also pushed the expressive boundaries of painting, infusing the medium with a new sense of bravado and experimentation. At the Prado Museum, participants will study these paintings up close and firsthand, discussing their construction and material history while considering modern conservation approaches. In a nearby workshop, students will then learn and experiment with the materials and techniques used to create this extraordinary body of work.
The residency will begin on 6 June 2026 and continue through the 14th. The cost will be $7800 (a 10% discount is available to faculty and full time students) and includes accommodations in a 4 star hotel, two group dinners, museum visits, materials and workshop space, as well as instruction. Airfare, other meals, and incidental expenses are not included.
